Writer, producer, and director Ingrid Veninger (Modra, The Animal Project) returns with her new coming-of-age film, Porcupine Lake, about girlhood, first loves, and the complexities young people face as they enter adulthood. Bea (Charlotte Salisbury) and her mom, Ally (Delphine Roussel, Almost Adults), head to Georgian Bay for the summer to reunite with Scotty (Christopher Bolton, TV’s Flashpoint), Bea’s dad and Ally’s husband, who has inherited his father’s restaurant in cottage country for a summer “trial run.” After Ally encourages soft-spoken Bea to explore on her own, she quickly makes a new friend in the raucous Kate, a local girl who introduces Bea to a world that pushes her outside of her comfort zone — and sparks an attraction between the two. The relationship between the girls is tested when they are confronted by Kate’s troubled brother, Romeo (Harrison Tanner), and the troubles of Bea’s parents’ relationship which threaten to drive a wedge between Kate and Bea forever.

Ingrid Veninger’s reputation for honest and frank portrayals of youth in her coming-of-age films is demonstrated again in Porcupine Lake, where the beauty of the northern Ontario landscape ignites quintessential Canadian summer nostalgia for the youthful feeling of endless cottage days filled with adventure.

“Remarkable performances by the two young actors at the centre of the film – along with assured, subtle storytelling by director/screenwriter Ingrid Veninger – propel this cottage country coming-of age drama.” – Marsha Lederman, The Globe and Mail
